My Grandfather, the Sailor

Remember how the harvest moon rose over the trees

Its yellow light brightening the wave’s tips to white

Remember how the clouds dipped behind the hill

In the special spot where the sun rises and

Illuminates the world

Remember how the city glowed in the distance

How Grandma picked out planes in reach

Of conversation

Remember how the embers burned like the jewels of fireflies

Pulsing to the steady heartbeat of Summer

Remember your sister pointing out the Big Dipper

How you stood on your tiptoes to lean over

The edge of the world

Remember that he is with you

Even across the ocean

His soul resides in all current of experience,

Pacific to Atlantic

Remember the body is simply a vessel

Like a boat that will always

Find its way home
