End of Summer Editor’s LEtter

I’ve been trying to write this letter for weeks now, and as the summer is coming to an end, many things are beginning to shift in my life. But for today, I am finally ready to introduce myself. Hi angels, I’m Kailah, the founding editor-in-chief of Mid-Heaven Magazine.

When the idea of Mid-Heaven came, it was rather sporadic. It began in a recycled spiral notebook, that quickly became flooded with black ink and the words “Mid-Heaven Magazine” written all across the margin. It was July when Mid-Heaven slowly started to ascend into reality, with understanding the endeavors of web design and Html coding. Evening Facetime calls to Sarah in Ireland and Friday evening “business meetings” at Tamira’s house where I wouldn’t get home until after midnight. Spending hours and hours brainstorming and drafting what Mid-Heaven would be.

I want to thank the girls, Tamira, our creative director and head of outreach & social media, and Sarah our Executive Editor for beginning this with me, the two who said yes to heaven and were ready to dive in without hesitation. I can easily say that Mid-Heaven wouldn’t be what it is without the two of you. Thank you for your constant devotion and love to Mid-Heaven. I also want to thank our amazing staff writers, (or as I call them, the Angels), Keana, Hannah, Samantha, and Aniliyah. I am forever grateful for you.

Now with Mid-Heaven connecting all of us, I know we will gracefully climb every obstacle that may come our way as we grow up. Regardless of where we are.

I realized It’s easy to fall deeply into the fantasy of what Mid-Heaven can be, to fall in love with an idea more than the process of making that dream a reality. I remember having a sticky note stuck below the keyboard of my laptop with gold glitter tape at its sides that said, “all my dreams are attainable, I will reach them” I wish for Mid-Heaven to become a space for weird/sad teen girl art, a place for underrepresented voices to truly have their time, a platform for all things art and writing. I want this to be the magazine of everyone's dreams, an immersive and inclusive space for all. Mid-Heaven is an experience, the dream we have for it, is as Tamira says “so much bigger than us.” We want to create a space not only for sad/weird girl art and writing but for the art & writing that is often diminished and not deemed as “serious.” The art that doesn’t get published in huge journals and magazines. We want this to be a space for other underrepresented voices to truly sing their song, write their story, make their art. However, the medium, however strange the voice.

The other day, on my walk home from meeting with friends for lunch I saw the number “333” alongside one of the houses on the street. It’s an angel number, meaning whatever I wished for is on the way. But, as early in Mid-Heaven’s life we are, I can already see that in front of me. What we have planned for the future of Mid-Heaven is worth looking out for, and we hope you readers are as excited for it as we are. Sarah says when she thinks of Mid-Heaven, she thinks of it as this “space in between” and I believe it. I don’t know where we’ll be another month from now, let alone a year or more, but I do know that we will continue to put our everything into this, into Mid-Heaven, and creating a space for your art and writing to exist.

Welcome to Mid-Heaven angels, we’re so glad you can join us.

Love,
Kailah
